This year’s London Construction Awards ceremony saw Select take home the ‘Technological Innovation of the Year’ award, for its Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWP) Telematics system.
Held at the Leonardo Royal London Tower Bridge Hotel on 23 September, the London Construction Awards celebrate the achievements, developments, and innovations within London's construction industry.
Described by the LCA judges as a ‘real game changer’, the MEWP Telematics system requires potential operators to present a code, card, or microchipped band to the keypad attached to the MEWP. Access will then only be granted once the embedded track unit system has verified that the credentials match those held on its internal or external database of approved users.
The system enables site administrators to approve or remove MEWP access in seconds, providing added safety assurance to projects by preventing unauthorised or untrained people from using the machine.
Other benefits of the new telematics system include:
- Assists with machine optimisation (utilisation)
- Increase operator accountability to help reduce machine damage
- Security and operational benefits through machine tracking
- Equipment health alerts help to reduce machine downtime
In October, the system will become a mandated requirement across all Laing O’Rourke projects.
Specialist Product Leader Tom Barrow said: “Being shortlisted for the award already felt like a great achievement, but to go on and win was unbelievable. There have been so many people involved in delivering this from concept to roll out and I would like to thank everyone who has played a part.
“I know receiving this award has reaffirmed the team’s commitment to continuing to develop innovations that make processes quicker and, importantly, safer for our people.”
